While driving with his daughter toward Richmond Pond, Joshua Christman came across something unimaginable — dozens of cats scattered across the icy road. They were not just wandering; they were cold, frightened, and clearly abandoned.
“I’ve seen a lot of roadblocks,” Joshua later shared, “but never one made of cats.”
It was a chilling sight. The cats, visibly distressed, clung to the sides of the road and hid along the backroads, trying to escape the biting cold. With snow beginning to fall and a major storm on the horizon, Joshua acted swiftly.
Going Live for a Lifeline
Joshua knew he had to do something. Pulling over, he went live on Facebook, hoping the heartbreaking scene would prompt help. The video showed cats jumping onto his truck, desperately seeking warmth and safety. Viewers were moved by the urgency and sincerity in his voice.
Thankfully, the video quickly caught the attention of the Berkshire Humane Society. With six inches of snow predicted and temperatures dropping fast, the clock was ticking.
A Community Comes Together
The humane society sprang into action. They deployed rescue teams with traps, blankets, and supplies, working against the worsening weather. Joshua didn’t just step aside — he stayed with them, monitoring traps and doing what he could to help.
“They did a tremendous job,” he said. “They set the traps, I helped watch them. All the credit goes to those hardworking folks.”
Together, they managed to rescue 15 cats ranging in age from six months to seven years. All were underweight, some shivering uncontrollably, and most too frightened to move.
Giving Names and New Chances
After their rescue, the cats were taken in for veterinary care. It was clear they had been dumped — likely by someone unable or unwilling to care for them. The shelter gave each cat a name to mark a new beginning. Four females were given names starting with the letter “D,” while the males were named after music legends.
One of the rescued cats, a 10-month-old orange tabby named Arlo, stood out immediately. He wasn’t just cute — he was charming.
A Family Finds Their Feline
Joshua’s wife, Jessica, had been watching his live video and felt an instant connection to Arlo. When the family visited the shelter, Arlo made the first move. He climbed right onto Jessica’s chest, curled up, and purred.
“It was like he was saying, ‘You’re my human now,'” she recalled, smiling.
Joshua’s children, Alice and Gabriel, instantly adored Arlo. Although the family already had six rescue pets, Arlo was welcomed like he’d always belonged. He became a symbol of their compassion and the love that animals bring into a home.

Justice for the Forgotten
Authorities launched an investigation into the abandonment, leading to charges against two individuals — Kelly Hathaway and Arthur Raney. Reports revealed that the cats were left behind due to pressure from a landlord over odor complaints.
The outcome was bittersweet. Both defendants agreed never to own pets again. But tragically, two of the abandoned cats died, and one still remains missing. Even so, thirteen found safety, warmth, and a second chance.
