Every day, countless stray dogs silently plead for help, their eyes full of hope. They rarely bark or whimper for attention. Instead, they patiently wait, trusting that someone kind will notice them. In Houston, Texas, one determined dog chose the entrance of an elementary school as his waiting spot. Little did he know, his quiet persistence would change his life forever.
A Teacher Notices Something Unusual
Each morning, Caleb Schaffer, a dedicated elementary school teacher, arrived at his school to find a skinny, tail-wagging dog sitting at the main entrance. At first, Schaffer felt confused by the dog’s presence, but he couldn’t stop to help. His teaching duties called, and he walked into school, leaving the dog behind.
“He was sitting right outside the main door, and his tail started thumping when he saw me,” Schaffer later recalled in an interview with The Dodo.
Though busy, the teacher couldn’t shake the image of the hopeful animal. After finishing his lessons that day, Schaffer returned to check on the dog—but he was gone. Unbeknownst to him, local shelter workers had attempted to catch the dog, unintentionally scaring him away.
A Return with Greater Determination
The next morning, the determined dog returned to the school. Once again, he greeted Schaffer with a hopeful tail wag. This time, the teacher noticed something distressing: the dog’s skin looked terrible, and he appeared dangerously thin. Schaffer made a silent promise to help him if he returned the following day.
Third Time’s the Charm
On the third day, the same scene unfolded—the dog was waiting patiently at the school entrance. But this time, Schaffer didn’t hesitate. He gently coaxed the dog into his car and brought him home. Unable to stay with the dog during the day, Schaffer asked his wife to care for the new houseguest until he returned from work.
That evening, Schaffer began calling local rescue organizations. Unfortunately, every one of them was overcrowded and unable to take the dog in. Not willing to give up, Schaffer took the next best step: he brought the dog to the local animal shelter so he could receive basic medical treatment and a much-needed bath.
“I figured some basic vet care at the shelter was better than nothing. He was really suffering,” Schaffer explained.
Clive’s New Beginning
The shelter named the dog Clive, and soon after, his story was posted on Facebook. The touching tale quickly reached Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption, a group that arranged for Clive to be placed in a foster home. Clive’s days of sleeping outside and being ignored were finally behind him.
Though some time has passed, Schaffer continues to share Clive’s story with his students. He uses it as a powerful lesson about compassion and responsibility.
“There are so many strays everywhere here,” Schaffer said. “It’s given me an opportunity to talk about spaying, neutering, heartworm prevention, and the reality of shelters.”

Whether Clive has found a permanent home or is still waiting for his forever family, one thing is certain: he is now a well-cared-for, happy dog who has touched many hearts. Thanks to a compassionate teacher who took a chance, Clive’s future looks brighter than ever.
