Meet Tam, the Shelter’s Gentle Soul

Tam is a senior dog who has lived at SARA for nearly nine years. Alongside his sister Daccia, Tam was born with a rare condition known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). This illness affects the connective tissues, resulting in fragile skin, weak joints, and slow wound healing. While their siblings found homes, Tam and Daccia needed more attention and medical care, which is why the shelter became their forever home.

In addition to EDS, Tam was born blind. Navigating the world through scent and sound, Tam moves slowly and carefully. Loud noises or unfamiliar environments often frighten him. However, Tam has found comfort in an unexpected place: the gentle company of cats.

A Safe Haven With Cats

From the beginning, Tam showed a natural calmness around cats. In turn, the cats at the shelter were drawn to his peaceful nature. Two particular cats have become his closest companions. Every night, the trio curls up together, offering each other warmth and security.

According to Hazel Skeet, a dedicated volunteer at the shelter, the cats treat Tam with extraordinary care. “They know he will lie quietly and be gentle with them. He’s the perfect pillow for a snooze, and Tam enjoys the affectionate closeness,” she said. These cats often cuddle next to him and even give him soft massages with their paws, easing his discomfort and filling his days with joy.

Comfort Through Cuddles and Companionship

The cats have made it their mission to help Tam feel less alone. When he roams around the shelter’s courtyard, they rub against him, offering reassurance and letting him know he is not alone. Tam seems to relax more when his feline friends are near. Their gentle touch appears to reduce his stress, especially during noisy or overwhelming times.

Tam spends much of his day lounging on benches under the sun or shade, soaking in the calming sounds of the refuge. He enjoys a peaceful life, and the constant presence of his cat friends has become essential to his emotional well-being.

Earning Tam’s trust isn’t easy for strangers. Due to his blindness, he stays cautious around new people. However, once someone gains his trust, Tam reveals his affectionate side. “He is a super affectionate and cuddly boy,” Skeet shared.

The love and patience shown by his cat companions demonstrate how animals can intuitively care for those in need. These cats don’t see Tam’s disabilities. Instead, they sense his need for love and respond with kindness.
