Denver Pilot Adopts Kitten Mid-Flight During Hurricane Rescue Mission

As Hurricane Idalia approached Florida with terrifying force, rescue organizations raced against time to save innocent lives. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, based in Virginia, and Greater Good Charities from Washington partnered to help relocate animals in danger. Together with Southwest Airlines, they coordinated a life-saving mission to fly nearly 150 cats and dogs away from the storm’s path to safety in Milwaukee.

The urgency of the operation filled the air with nervous energy and hope. Some of the animals even got to ride in the cabin alongside the crew, adding to the special atmosphere on board. According to Mirah Horowitz, CEO of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, “It was truly a magical experience. The animals got to ride in the cabin.”

A Special Bond Forms in the Sky

Southwest Airlines staff warmly welcomed their furry passengers, ensuring each one felt safe and calm. However, something extraordinary happened mid-flight. Captain Matt Prebish, a seasoned Denver-based pilot, found himself drawn to a tiny kitten named Avery. Her fearless nature and playful energy immediately stood out.

What began as a routine rescue mission soon turned into a heartfelt personal story. As Avery playfully pawed at her surroundings, Matt felt an unexpected connection. Thoughts of his own home filled his mind. Although he hadn’t planned to bring home a pet, something about Avery felt meant to be.

A Pilot’s Instinct and a Wife’s Intuition

As the flight neared its destination, weather conditions worsened, causing a brief delay in landing. That pause gave Matt just enough time to make an important call. He reached out to his wife, asking how she would feel about welcoming a new kitten into their home. Her response came with no surprise.

“My wife said she knew that when I accepted this trip that I would probably come home with some animal,” Matt shared, laughing. Her intuition had proven right. With her enthusiastic blessing, Matt was ready to make it official.

Paperwork in the Sky

The adoption process began mid-flight, creating a moment of joyful chaos. The rescue teams scrambled to prepare the paperwork, determined to finalize the adoption before the plane landed. Horowitz reflected, “It definitely wasn’t anticipated. There was a little bit of a mad scramble to get the paperwork done for an adoption.”

Within minutes, Avery went from rescued passenger to beloved family member of the Prebish household. She had no idea just how much her life—and Matt’s—had changed in the clouds that day.

A Hero’s Journey Comes Full Circle

After landing in Milwaukee, Matt and Avery prepared to fly home to Denver together. As he looked down at the kitten resting peacefully, Matt felt deep gratitude. He had joined a mission to help animals in need and unexpectedly found a new companion along the way.

“I’m honored and glad that we could make a difference. And hopefully these animals will find their forever homes and make a bunch of people very happy,” Matt said.

The Bigger Impact of One Small Adoption

By relocating the animals to Milwaukee, Florida shelters could now accommodate pets injured or displaced by the hurricane. The rescue effort not only saved lives but also opened space for more emergency cases. The chain reaction of compassion created new chances for animals in crisis.
