After waiting nearly four years for someone to love her, a sweet dog named Sora experienced both joy and heartbreak within a single day.
Sora, a beautiful black Labrador-Pitbull mix, was surrendered to Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, back in July 2021. Her former owner gave her up after realizing they couldn’t meet her emotional and training needs. Since then, Sora has remained at the shelter, quietly waiting for someone to choose her.
A Glimmer of Hope
Despite her playful nature and endless energy, Sora struggled to capture the attention of potential adopters. For over 900 days, she watched other dogs come and go, her tail wagging in hope each time someone walked by her kennel.
Valley Animal Center, the largest no-kill shelter in the area, described her as a fun-loving pup who would thrive in an active home.
“Sora is a sweet pup that has great energy. She’s perfect for long walks or bike rides—she can easily keep up,” the shelter shared on Facebook.
One day, the long wait seemed to finally end. A visitor expressed interest in Sora, and she was adopted. Everyone at the shelter rejoiced, believing this was the fresh start she deserved.
A Heartbreaking Return
But Sora’s happiness didn’t last. Less than 24 hours after going home, she was returned. Her new owner said the adjustment was too much, too fast—Sora hadn’t had time to settle in before meeting new people and being thrust into unfamiliar surroundings.
“Sora did not get enough time to decompress in her new home and was introduced to new family members too quickly,” Sim Kaur from Valley Animal Center explained to Newsweek.
Just like that, Sora was back in her kennel, confused and heartbroken.
Still Hoping for a Home
Spending nearly four years in a shelter has taken an emotional toll on Sora. While the staff gives her as much love and attention as possible, it can’t compare to a stable home. The prolonged shelter life has left her with signs of anxiety, something the team believes can be healed with the right adopter.
Mariah Prudhume, a certified dog trainer at the center, believes Sora’s personality could completely transform with love and consistency. “With patience, she wouldn’t be the reactive dog she is today. She’d finally be the joyful, goofy girl she was meant to be,” said the center in an Instagram post.
Sora is great with adults and children over five, but she’ll need a single-pet home and a committed family willing to give her the time and training she needs.
She’s more than just a shelter dog—Sora is a loyal companion waiting for someone to believe in her.
