New Year’s Day is supposed to be filled with hope, but in Gonzales, California, it began with heartbreak. A family called Rescue Alliance director Jonathan Henriques after witnessing a horrifying scene: a group of teens launching fireworks at a defenseless kitten.
Jonathan rushed to the location, but nothing could prepare him for the cruelty he was about to witness. There, on the street, was a six-week-old kitten tied tightly to a leash and collar. He had no way to escape. The teens had turned a celebration into a nightmare, laughing as they fired Roman candles directly at the helpless baby.
“They had the kitten on an actual leash with a little collar so the kitten couldn’t run away, and then the kids were actually shooting Roman candles at it,” Jonathan said in disbelief.
The Damage Done: Angel’s Injuries and Rescue
By the time Jonathan arrived, the kitten’s eyes were already severely damaged. The scorching heat and bright flashes of the exploding fireworks had left visible injuries. The cruelty of the act was devastating, and the young teens appeared to show no remorse. They fled the scene when they saw Jonathan approach.
The tiny kitten, later named Angel, was in a critical state. Jonathan held him close and rushed him to the nearest veterinary clinic, fearing the worst.
Sadly, those fears were confirmed. One of Angel’s eyes was so badly injured that it might never heal. Vets explained that delicate surgery or even eye removal might be necessary to give him any chance of living without pain.
Safe But Not Yet Healed: Angel’s Road to Recovery
Angel is now being fostered through Rescue Alliance. He’s finally receiving the warmth, love, and care he deserves. “Angel is now safe in our care and getting the vet care he needs to thrive,” the organization shared with the public.
Despite being in a safe home, Angel’s recovery journey is just beginning. His injuries require expensive treatments and possibly life-changing surgery. The Rescue Alliance has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover these growing costs.
