When Chmurka first arrived at a cat sanctuary, her health was in terrible shape. The staff could tell she had lived through hardship as a stray. Her ears were badly infected—so much so that the only option was to remove them entirely. No one knew exactly what caused the infections, but one thing was certain: Chmurka needed immediate medical care and compassion.
Battling Health Challenges With Courage
Her struggles didn’t end with her ears. Chmurka also suffered from a severely swollen lip. Despite trying various treatments for months, including steroids, nothing helped. Eventually, the vets made the difficult decision to remove her lip as well. Along with that, she had no teeth and was unusually small for her age.
Though she looked fragile, Chmurka had a gentle soul and an unbreakable will to live. Everyone who met her saw something special in her—a quiet strength hidden beneath her wounds.
A Temporary Home Turns Into Forever
With over 130 cats in the sanctuary, Chmurka couldn’t get the focused attention she needed. Wanting to give her a better chance at recovery, the sanctuary’s owner asked one of their trusted volunteers to foster her. The goal was to provide Chmurka with a calm, quiet space to rest, heal, and regain her confidence.
At first, the foster mom assumed her role would be short-term. She worried that Chmurka, with all her needs, might never find a permanent home. Chmurka didn’t get along well with other animals and would often get anxious around them. Finding her a quiet home without pets seemed like the best option—if they could find one.
A Slow But Beautiful Transformation
Time passed, and something magical began to happen. In the peaceful foster environment, Chmurka slowly let down her guard. She started to relax and trust her foster mom. With each day, their bond grew stronger. Chmurka began to enjoy being held and petted. Her once-defensive behavior faded into affectionate purrs.

Despite her missing features and petite frame, Chmurka never seemed to see herself as limited. Her foster mom explained, “She doesn’t even realize that she’s just this toothless small disabled cat and she’s like, ‘No, I don’t see my disability.’”

Of course, there are some challenges but there is beauty in how resilient they are and how they just do not care about their disability at all.”
